An underground parking garage that collapsed this morning between Ouellette and Dufferin Avenue — and sent one person to hospital — is making breaking news headlines all over the region.

First reported by local media, all three major Detroit television stations have picked up on the story and some have even sent their news helicopters:  Channel 7 WXYZ in Detroit has a video from their chopper here, Channel 4 WDIV has a video from above at this link and Fox 2 News’ “SkyFox” helicopter shot this footage south of downtown.

The London Free Press’ twitter reports that they’ve dispatched reporters to Windsor to cover the collapse, which is shown in photos and videos as a giant sloping hole in the middle of the ground level of the asphalt structure.

The parking structure collapsed at the same time as a blue work crane was moving along the top level.  Ministry of Labour and structural engineers are on scene, but have not yet determined if the work crane caused the collapse or contributed to a previously weakened structure.

Drivers are asked to stay away from the 1300 block of Dufferin where the garage is located.  It’s attached to a restaurant, Thai Silk and the campaign office for Windsor-West MPP Sandra Pupatello.

The Ontario Provincial Police are sending their Provincial Emergency Response Team to the site to search for any persons who may be trapped below the broken asphalt.

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis declared a state of emergency.
