Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 43 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit does not report case counts and statistics on weekends but provides a weekend summary.
New & Total Cases
Of the 43 new cases: 19 cases were reported on October 23rd, 11 cases were reported on October 24th, and 13 cases were reported on October 25th.
The Health Unit says 22 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 15 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 4 cases are still under investigation.
Total overall cases increased from 20,350 on Friday October 22nd to 20,393 on Monday October 25th.
They say 161 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 38 since Friday).
Variants of Concern
- 1,839 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
- 2,823 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 29 since Friday)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 323,582 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+841 since Friday)
- 17,150 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-619 since Friday)
- 306,432 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,460 since Friday)
- 4,862 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+107 since Friday)
- A total of 634,876 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,408 since Friday)
Vaccination Percentages
- 73.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Friday)
- 85.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 69.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since Friday)
- 80.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

The Health Unit lists 19,769 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 80 resolved cases since Friday.
Deaths
The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 bringing the local death toll to 463. They say a man in his 60s from the community passed away.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 12 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
