Alcohol shouldn’t be sold at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre — that’s the recommendation from city administration in a report going to Windsor City Council.
In January, the city put out a tender looking for an outside provider for food and drink sales. One of the options was to also provide alcohol sales within the facility. The option to include the sale of alcoholic beverages was brought forward by city administration as an opportunity to include a new service for customers at Adventure Bay that is available at other waterparks, as well as at other City of Windsor facilities such as the WFCU Centre.
CGC Concessions Group Canada Inc came in as the winning bidder for a three year term. The contract will involve payments to the city of $45,000.50, $47,000.00, and $47,312.87 in years one, two and three, respectively.
CGC has agreed to offer employment to all existing staff and will only sell their products in accordance with the city’s exclusivity agreement with Pepsi. In addition, CGC has agreed not to sell any gum, cotton candy or popcorn products as they create maintenance challenges within the facility.
The proposed menu will also have offerings that are considered healthier food choices, including items high in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, and lower in fat, sugar and sodium.
As part of their bid, CGC included an option for alcohol sales, but city administrators are recommending against that option due to logistics and additional risks involved.
The city report notes that increasing attendance and revenue at the water park via daily admission, membership growth, and expanding programming is a key focus for the facility for the next several years. The service of alcohol would require segregating an area of deck space designated for alcohol consumption.
