There are fewer students going to the University of Windsor this fall.
According to a campus update released Friday by University President Alan Wildeman, there were 13,534 full‐time students on campus the first day of classes. This is 326 fewer then they had in 2015 on the first day of school.
This drop is a result of a decline of 668 undergraduate students and an increase of 326 graduate students, according to the President.
Wildeman says that looking forward to the Fall of 2016 with historical retention rates they are looking for looking at an enrollment of 13,300.
The president says that based on these preliminary enrollment projections, they anticipate a revenue increase of $1.7 million. This will be comprised of an overall increase of $3.3 million in academic fees, a reduction of $1.4 million in the education grant, and a further reduction of 0.2 million in the provincial operating.
The university is expecting an increase of 8.3 million in expenditures, with the majority of that increase from salaries, wages and benefits. The remaining $1.1 million projected increase in expenditures is primarily for investments made annually in scholarships.
Overall, Wildeman writes that based on these revenue and expenditure estimates, they project a budget shortfall of $6.6 million.
To address the shifting enrollment, Wildeman says that the university is embarking on a campus consultation to develop a much stronger marketing strategy. The University has hired Scott Thornley + Company to assist them in the development of a new marketing plan.
The university is also moving forward with its plan to hire 50 new faculty. The first 18 tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, to begin July 1, 2016 has been advertised. More information is available on those postings on a new dedicated website found here.
