2 New Deaths, 37 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Saturday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 37 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Saturday, bringing the local total to 15,752.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,715 on Friday May 7th to 15,752 on Saturday May 8th and 348 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 22 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 8 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are outbreak-related, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,120 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 40 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,028 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 40 identified since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Brazilian Variant (P.1) (increase of 1 identified since yesterday)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 178 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 173,118 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,564 since yesterday)
    • 158,914 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,501 since yesterday)
    • 14,204 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+63 since yesterday)
  • A total of 187,322 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,627 since yesterday)

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 39.52 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • Adults aged 50 and older in 2021 living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
      • Adults aged 18 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
      • Pregnant individuals
      • People with the “highest risk”, “high risk” and “at risk” health conditions
      • Healthcare workers in the “highest priority”, “very high priority” or “high priority” groups
      • Essential Workers Who Cannot Work from Home (Group 1)

  • Pharmacy Vaccinations (AstraZeneca)
  • Pharmacy Vaccinations (Moderna)
    • 14 pharmacies located in hot spot postal codes will soon offer Moderna as part of a pilot project.
    • Eligibility: adults aged 18 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
    • The Health Unit says the full list of pharmacies is still in the works and will be released soon by the province.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,988 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 53 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 416. They say a woman in her 100s from the community and a woman in her 90s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 22 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 18 people in acute care (increase of 14), and 4 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

  • 1 outbreak at an agri-farm in Kingsville (positive for the U.K. Variant B.1.1.7) (new outbreak)
