Lakeshore council has voted unanimously to close the Belle River West Beach due to ongoing safety issues and large crowds.
In a Facebook posting, Deputy Mayor Tracey Bailey said “this was a very difficult decision that addresses the safety of our residents and our asset. The Emergency control group will work hard to position us to safely reopen.”
Town officials say the beach has seen a dramatic increase in the number of visitors who are not following the physical distancing requirements recommended by public health officials.
“The West Beach is a popular destination on Lake St. Clair,” said Mayor Tom Bain. “We recognize that many of our residents and families enjoy visiting the beach but unfortunately the large number of people creates significant concerns.”
The town is also asking boaters coming from the lake to stop bringing their water craft to the West Beach.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit will also not be performing weekly beach inspections or testing beach water for the presence of E.Coli during the 2020 season.
