It has been fifty-seven weeks since construction started at the site of the future Downtown Windsor Family Aquatic Complex on the Western Super Anchor lands. The once-parking lot is now a sprawling structure rising three stories above the western portion of Downtown Windsor.
“We are constructing a facility for the community,” explains Don, “one that also serves as a state-of-the-art competitive facility. Seniors are key to our local market, so the pool includes some innovative features to enhance its community use.”
Recent construction work has concentrated on two of these innovative features: a moveable bulkhead and a moveable floor, both of which increase accessibility for persons with limited mobility. The moveable floor moves to the top of the pool water at its north end. This allows wheelchairs to roll directly into the pool. The thermal bulkhead reconfigures the pool into a smaller unit in which the water is heated to higher temperatures.
The competitive pool and diving area will be open for the International Children’s Games in August 2013. Work is continuing on budget and on schedule with the official opening of the entire 144,000-square-foot complex scheduled for December 2013.
