Daylight Saving Time officially ends this Sunday morning at 2am, which means it’s time to set your clocks back by one hour, Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services also reminds Windsorites that this is a good time of the year to install fresh batteries in your smoke detectors.

“In order for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job, they need to have working batteries,” explained Fire Chief Bruce Montone, “Once a year, old batteries should be replaced with new batteries. When you change your clocks this weekend, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services wants everyone to take the time to install new batteries in all smoke alarms and CO alarms.”

In order to survive a fire, you need to be provided with an early warning and know what to do when the smoke alarms sound. It’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it is recommended to also install smoke alarms inside all bedrooms.

Carbon monoxide alarms are now required by law as well and should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

Tampering with, or removing the batteries from your smoke alarms is against the law. Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000.
