The City of Windsor is looking at demolishing four abandoned buildings under its blight mitigation strategy.

The buildings located at 1010 Wyandotte Street West, 1503 Hickory, 546 Aylmer and 872 Chatham Street East are four on a list of 31 buildings that the building department would like to see demolished.

All of the derelict buildings set to be demolished have been vacant for two or more years, and have had several orders placed upon them by city building inspectors.  All buildings also have outstanding taxes owed on them. Cost to demolish the buildings will be added to each property owners’ taxes.

It’s about time that the City steps in. These houses should have been demolished months/years ago. Unfortunately, instead of waiting for the City to get a move on, people have been taking things into their own hands by dangerously setting places on fire. I believe there were 3 houses set on fire in my parents neighbourhood. There are two abandonded houses behind my parents place, the only thing that has been done is the grass has been cut. We are waiting for it to fall to pieces….

Glad to see this happening, I love riding my bike around town just seeing some new life in the city… a person painting a railing, doing some landscaping, fixing an old porch step, planting a tree… all these are subtle improvements that make a big difference to how you feel about an area. IF we see more of these bigger eye sores fixed or removed … it really makes a big impact on a community. (I agree with Mary Beth, if they could save the trees that would be great, especially at the chatham street location)
