On this day two hundred years ago — June 18th 1812 — the United States government declared war on Great Britain. This was the first time that the United States had declared war on another nation.

Several days later, on June 28th, 1812, news of this declaration reached Colonel St. George, commander at Fort Amherstburg.

With approximately 300 British regulars, he dispatched a detachment of militia to Sandwich.
