April 19, 2014 marks the seventh annual Record Store Day, a day where the music industry celebrates indie record shops around the world by releasing limited edition vinyl releases.

The third Sunday in April is the busiest day of the year for locally owned record store Dr. Disc (471 Ouellette Avenue), which will be celebrating Record Store Day with a large selection of special edition Record Store Day vinyl. These exclusively released albums are only available in-person at your local indie record shops. Ah Some Records (3341 Tecumseh Road East) will also have some Record Store Day releases.

“Record store day has continued to gain popularity so it really does help us. The exclusive releases are a big draw for customers. The releases are limited so it is always on a first come first serve basis. Some of the big releases will be Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Tame Impala,” said Dr. Disc co-owner Mara O’Donnell.

“I’m looking forward to getting a copy of the Black Angels 10″ EP, ‘Clear Lake Forest’,” said Dr. Disc employee Alexander Zelenyj.

Dr. Disc will have special guests at the store, including DJ Pat Petro and Learning, and will have extended hours and be open from 9am – 8pm. They will also be adding thousands of newly acquired LPs to their inventory on April 19.

Locally owned ShopEco (378 Devonshire Road) will be promoting Record Store Day by offering a special discount.

“On Record Store Day we’ll be offering 15% off all purchases when a customer presents an April 2014 receipt from Dr. Disc,” said ShopEco owner Debra Purdy.

Leading up to Record Store Day, Dr. Disc will be having a sale on used CDs and DVDs. From April 12 -17 all used CDs and DVDs will be buy three get the fourth one free.

To find out more about what special releases are being offered this year, you can check out the Record Store Day webpage. It’s important to note that due to the limited release of these items not all record stores will be receiving the same products, and they usually don’t know for certain what they will have available until the day of the event.
