All Future Shop locations in Canada have closed their doors, some temporarily and others for good, according to parent company Best Buy.
The company made the decision to permanently close 66 stores across Canada — including the one in Windsor — and rebrand the remaining 65 stores as Best Buy locations.
One former employee told windsoriteDOTca that all employees were called for a meeting Saturday morning and were notified of the closure. The company then immediately started to paper up the store’s windows.
A sign placed on the door of the Windsor store indicates that it is permanently closed.
Some employees were given options to move to Best Buy, according to workers who contacted windsoriteDOTca.
The company says their changes will eliminate 500 full-time and 1,000 part-time positions across Canada. The affected employees will receive severance, employee assistance and outplacement support.
Future Shop was founded in 1982, and was purchased by Best Buy in 2001.
The company says all Future Shop gift cards will be accepted at any Best Buy Canada location and at BestBuy.ca. Existing product orders, service appointments and warranties will continue to be honoured and Future Shop purchases to be returned or exchanged will also be accepted at any Best Buy.
Customers with any questions are asked to call 1-866-BEST-BUY (1-866-237-8289).
