Essex Region Conservation Authority Driving Green

The Essex Region Conservation Authority will green its vehicle fleet to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently the Conservation Authority has 13 vehicles that are required for a variety of tasks, such as water quality monitoring, tree planting, engaging in site visit, surveys and inspections, responding to flood and erosion emergencies and maintaining Conservation Areas. Currently two of these vehicles are hybrids.

“Over the next seven years, as each vehicle comes to the normal end of its lifespan, we will replace them with the most fuel efficient vehicles on the market that allow us to carry out our operations,” explained Richard Wyma, ERCA’s General Manager. “While the cost of purchasing these more environmentally friendly vehicles is somewhat higher than that of conventional vehicles, the emission savings are over 13,000 kilograms of carbon/year not being released into the atmosphere.” The additional costs would be approximately $4,700/year, and would equate to removing 2.5 – 3 vehicles per year from the road.
