16 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 16 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 16,608.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,592 on Thursday June 3rd to 16,608 on Friday June 4th and 162 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 7 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition source of 1 case is still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,831 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 13 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,693 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 12 today)
  • 7 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1) (increase of 1 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 92 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 256,079 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+2,824 since yesterday)
    • 220,195 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-701 since yesterday) *
    • 35,884 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+3,525 since yesterday)
  • A total of 291,963 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+6,349 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 58.46 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 72.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 8.19 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are completely vaccinated
    • 10.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are completely vaccinated

The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 80 years of age and older.

    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,019 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 19 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 427.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 13 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 8 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
