ENWIN is sending out a warning about phone and online utilities fraud attempts, and giving customers the information they
need to recognize and report a scam.
“We are aware that there have been a series of fraudulent calls being made recently, demanding that customers make immediate payment and directing them to a phone number that shows as an ENWIN number on phone displays,” said ENWIN spokesperson, Barbara Peirce Marshall. “We are warning customers to beware of the potential for both phone and online scams, and to protect themselves from fraud.”
ENWIN wants customers to know that the utility does not call customers and demand payment by credit card over the phone, and that the only valid ENWIN website is www.enwin.com.
“Fraudsters will develop elaborate schemes to defraud the public. Call displays may be spoofed to display ENWIN for the incoming call. Always question ANY unsolicited phone call looking for payment. Remember there is no rush, hang up the phone and call ENWIN if you have questions or concerns regarding your bill,” said Constable Andrew Drouillard of the Windsor Police.
Here’s how you can stay safe from utility bill scams:
- If someone calls and threatens to disconnect you if you don’t make a payment right away by pre-paid credit card or wire transfer, SAY NO and HANG UP! Then call ENWIN.
- Don’t trust everything you read online. If you think something is fake, it may well be. For ENWIN information, always visit enwin.com, or call us at 519-255-2727.
- NEVER give your personal or financial information over the phone.
- Report any suspicious incidents to ENWIN and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. This agency collects information on fraud and works closely with police to solve these crimes.
