The OPP are warning that as the Christmas season winds down, the break in season picks up; but there are steps we can take to draw less attention to our homes after the holiday’s gifts have been opened.
Police say that a sure fire way to prevent advertising what gifts you received is to ensure the boxes they came in are carefully packaged for disposal, not showing what the box contained and only left out just prior to garbage collection.
This will prevent would-be-thieves from knowing what new gifts you received. Staggering the amount of boxes you put into the garbage each week is another way of advertising how many new gifts are potentially in the home.
For those citizens leaving to warmer climates over the next several weeks, the OPP urges you to ensure that your home is secure, someone is looking after it and that you ensure it has a “lived in” look. Having someone keep your driveway clear of snow and picking up the newspaper and/or mail while you are away is an added security measure as well.
In fact they say having a neighbour park their vehicle in your unattended driveway will give it the added perception that someone is home.
