Police have charged a Leamington resident after a gathering in an apartment that exceeded the legal limits.

Leamington OPP officers were called around 2:00am Sunday morning to a residence on Talbot Street West.

Upon arrival, officers observed more than 20 people present inside a residence within an apartment complex.

OPP say the gathering was in violation of the total number of persons allowed to gather together indoors according to recent amendments to the Reopening Ontario Act.

Ontario changed the limit for social gatherings to 10 people at an indoor event or gathering on September 19th.

A 54-year-old Leamington resident was issued a Provincial Offences Notice and was charged with failing to comply with a continued section 7.0.2 order, contrary to the Reopening Ontario Act, 2020.

Police say the offence carries a fine of $750, if convicted.

Essex County OPP say they will continue to respond to and investigate violations under the Reopening Ontario Act, charging those individuals who fail to comply, in the interests of public safety.
