SETTING UP YOUR WORKSTATION PART I: THE CHAIR

Improper workstation setup is one of the main causes of repetitive strain injuries, as your body is required to function in unfavourable positions and postures. Here are some tips to reduce the stress on your body while working at a computer desk.

  • Chairs should be height adjustable, especially if multiple people use the same workstation
  • When sitting with your back against the chair, the end of the seat should come just before your knee crease, your hips and knees should be bent to 90° and your feet flat on the floor. You can also use a small step stool to rest your feet.
  • Lumbar supports or a small rolled towel should be used to maintain the curve in your lower back when sitting.
  • Chairs that can swivel also help reduce twisting of your spine when reaching.
