Chatham-Kent Police have arrested two people after they allegedly tried to steal meat from a grocery store by hiding it while at the checkout.

Around 11pm Thursday, two people were shopping at a grocery store on the south side of Chatham. While shopping in the same store, police say an off-duty loss prevention officer observed the two people conceal packages of meat ‘on their persons’.

The alleged thieves went to the checkout where they paid for two items. Police say they made no attempt to pay for the hidden meat.

A 22-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were arrested and charged with theft under $5000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5000.
