Windsor Police are investigation two separate purse snatchings that took place in the downtown core.

The first took place at 11:30pm Saturday.  A 74-year-old man from Amherstburg was just leaving Hotel Dieu Hospital after visiting his wife who was in hospital. The man was bringing his wife’s purse home and on his way to the car, he was attacked by a male who pushed the man up against a parked car and stole the purse he was carrying.

A friend who was with the victim chased the suspect, but he got away. As the suspect climbed over a fence a small baseball bat was dropped by him.

The man was shaken but physically unharmed. The suspect is described as a white male around 19 years of age. He was wearing a red t-shirt.

The second occurred an hour later. Police say that a 23-year-old female walking along Chatham Street near the bus station when a male walking the opposite direction bumped into her. As he did this he demanded the victim give him her purse, at which time he produced a thin bladed knife and threatened to harm her.

The suspect was about to grab the purse but was scared off by some people who were nearby. The suspect fled westbound towards the liquor store on Church Street.

The victim was shaken but unharmed.

The suspect is described as a 20-year-old male with a thin build, wearing a red t-shirt and dark ball cap. He was armed with a knife.

Police are investigating if it is the same suspect in both purse snatching, as the descriptions are similar.

Anyone who may have seen either purse snatching are asked to call police or crime stoppers.
