A motorcycle accident shut down the EC Row Expressway for over an hour, Friday evening.

Police say that a 20-year-old male was driving his 1981 Suzuki 650 motorcycle onto the Expressway from Dougall Road, lost control just past Howard Avenue and crashed. No other vehicles were involved.

The male received significant road rash injuries to his head, chin and hands.

Police say that the driver had an M1 licence, which is a beginners licence for a motorcycle. This type of license carries restrictions where he rides and is not allowed on any highway with a speed limit of 100 km/hr with this class of licence. He was charged for violating his licence conditions.

“He is fortunate to be alive especially with the amount of traffic at that hour on the Expressway on a Friday night” said Staff Sergeant Steve Bodri. “As the weather eventually gets better, motorists also need to be aware of motorcycles as they start to make an appearance on the roads in the nice weather”.

Damage to the motorcycle was estimate at $5,000.
