8 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Monday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 8 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Monday, bringing the local total to 16,729.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,721 on Sunday June 13th to 16,729 on Monday June 14th and 109 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 1 case is travel related outside of North America, 1 case is community acquired, 4 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, and the acquisition sources of 2 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,918 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case totals:

  • 1,762 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 2)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 12 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 50 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 265,233 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+318 since yesterday)
    • 187,284 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-1,829 since yesterday) *
    • 77,949 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+2,147 since yesterday)
  • A total of 343,182 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,465 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 60.55 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 72.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 17.79 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 22.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated

Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

    • Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)

    • None at this time.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 70 years of age and older.
      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before April 18th, 2021

  • AstraZeneca:
    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,187 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 14 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 433.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 14 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 11 people in acute care (increase of 1 today), and 3 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
