The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 3 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday, bringing the local total to 16,820.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,817 on Monday June 28th to 16,820 on Tuesday June 29th and 59 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 1 case is community acquired, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and 1 case is still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,961 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

1,801 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
3 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 6 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

272,513 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+469 since yesterday)
- 122,511 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-4,110 since yesterday) *
- 150,002 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+4,579 since yesterday)
A total of 422,515 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,048 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

62.21 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
34.24 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated

The Health Unit lists 16,327 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 3 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 434.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 14 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 7 people in acute care (increase of 3 today), and 7 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
