1 New Death, 243 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex As Of Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has announced 243 new cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, bringing the local total to 5,446.

Cases increased from 5,203 on Thursday December 17th to 5,446 on Friday December 18th and 1,014 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Friday’s 243 new cases has set a record for the highest number of new daily cases locally. The previous record was 195 new cases, set just this past Monday.

The Health Unit says 31 cases are related to outbreaks, 5 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, and 207 cases are still under investigation.

They say 4,337 people locally have recovered (an increase of 177 recoveries today).

There has been one additional death from COVID-19 as of Friday bringing the local death toll to 95. Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says a woman in her 60s with underlying health conditions passed away.

Hospitalizations

As of Friday, the Health Unit lists 66 hospitalizations: 52 people in acute care (an increase of 4 today), and 14 people in the ICU (an increase of 2 today) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

The Health Unit says 71 patients with suspected COVID-19 are currently hospitalized awaiting test results and these patients are cared for by hospital staff with the same precautions as positive cases until proven otherwise. These patients are not included in cases counts as they are not confirmed cases.

Long-term Care / Retirement Home Outbreaks

As of Friday, the following are under outbreak:

  • Sun Parlour Home (Leamington) has 0 resident cases and 2 staff cases (new Thursday afternoon)
  • Banwell Gardens Care Centre (Windsor) has 2 resident cases and 1 staff case (1 new resident case)
  • The Shoreview at Riverside (Windsor) has 1 resident case and 2 staff cases
  • La Chaumiere Retirement (Puce) has 0 resident cases and 1 staff case
  • Extendicare Tecumseh (Tecumseh) has 26 resident cases and 5 staff case (18 new resident cases)
  • Berkshire Care Center (Windsor) has 27 resident cases and 23 staff cases (2 new resident cases)
  • The Village at St. Clair (Windsor) has 61 resident cases and 40 staff cases
  • Country Village (Woodslee) has 2 resident cases and 2 staff cases
  • Chartwell St. Clair Beach (Tecumseh) has 39 resident cases and 4 staff cases (3 new resident cases)
  • Village of Aspen Lake (Windsor) has 1 resident case and 2 staff cases

  • 3 outbreaks at agri-farms in Leamington
  • 3 outbreaks at agri-farms in Kingsville
  • 1 outbreak at a health care and social assistance workplace in Lakeshore
  • 1 outbreak at a finance and insurance workplace in Leamington
  • 1 outbreak at a manufacturing facility in Windsor
  • 1 outbreak at a manufacturing facility in Kingsville
  • 1 outbreak at a manufacturing facility in Tecumseh

The Health Unit says detailed data (case sources, outbreak numbers, etc) may not be up to date at this time due to delays with case and contact management and the high volume of recent cases.
