The outbreak at F.W. Begley Public School on Assumption Street has now resulted in 37 confirmed and 2 probable cases of COVID-19, according to the Windsor Essex County Health Unit.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says Begley now has 37 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2 probable cases.
He says 29 cases are confirmed student cases (and 2 probable student cases), 8 cases are staff cases, and the presumed index case was a staff member.
“By far this has become the largest school outbreak in the province,” he said.
Dr. Ahmed says breaking the chain of transmission helped to limit more of the spread.
“Dismissing the entire school really helped us from a control perspective so that there is no ongoing transmission,” he said.
Dr. Ahmed says the Health Unit is investigating how the virus spread in the school and further details will be coming
“We’d like to understand how this spread happened and how the infection moved from one cohort to another and infected the entire school,” he said.
Dr. Ahmed says to date 283 students out of 450 have been tested, 47 staff members have been tested, and 141 family members from the school population have been tested.
He also noted that family members of those at the school have tested positive, but the Health Unit is still investigating the total number of those positive cases.
