The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed 4 new cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, bringing the local total to 2,470. They say 2,292 people locally have recovered.

Cases increased from 2,466 on Sunday August 23rd to 2,470 on Monday August 24th and 95 people are currently self-isolating with COVID-19.

The Health Unit says three of the four new cases are residents in a retirement home and one case is an agri-farm worker.

The Health Unit listed one additional death on Sunday, but there are no additional deaths as of Monday and the local death toll stands at 72. Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says Sunday’s death was a man in his 60s from a retirement home who passed away in hospital.

As of Monday, the Health Unit’s website lists 7 people as hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex, and 4 hospitalizations are listed at Windsor Regional Hospital.

Two retirement homes remain under outbreak: Shoreview at Riverside (Windsor – 4 staff cases), and New Beginnings (Leamington – 4 staff cases, 17 resident cases).

The Health Unit says some data is currently unavailable or may not be up to date as they are switching to a new data tracking system over the next week.

Workplace Outbreaks

As of Monday, the Health Unit says two agri-farms in Leamington remain under outbreak.

A workplace outbreak is declared when two or more employees test positive for COVID-19 within a reasonable timeline to suspect transmission in the workplace, according to the Health Unit. Officials with the Health Unit have said a workplace will only be named if a threat to the public exists.
