The Town of Lakeshore has received 100% grant funding to undertake a combined heat and power detailed engineering study for the Atlas Tube Centre.
Combined heat and power, also known as cogeneration, is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from a single fuel source, in this case natural gas. Producing on-site electricity through the consumption of natural gas reduces the demand on existing electricity delivery infrastructure. Natural gas also costs less than electricity which can reduce utility costs for the Town of Lakeshore at the Atlas Tube Centre.
The study will look at the Atlas Tube Centre’s ability to use natural gas, electricity use, options for maximizing return on investment, and estimated savings.
The Atlas Tube Centre, which opened in November 2014, was built to LEED Silver standards however the town feels that there may still be room for efficiencies in hydro usage, especially when the Aquatic Centre opens in the summer of 2016.
