Amherstburg celebrated Canada Day their own way, with cupcakes, demonstrations and lots of local talent.

The day began with Zumba demonstrations at Fort Malden Park’s north entrance. The attention was soon turned over to the rolling hills in the middle of the park where a canon was set up to fire and begin the day’s festivities. Everyone was invited to enjoy cupcakes, watch Fort Malden demonstrations and even see local singers, bands, and dancers perform.

“This year we have a fabulous line-up of local talent and we’re just so happy to have them here and showcase youth and established artists in our community,” said Jen Ibrahim, Visitor Information Centre Manager for Amherstburg. “I just hope that they appreciate Canada for the country that it is how wonderful it is an we’re just so fortunate to be able to celebrate it on this free land at Fort Malden National Historic Park.”

For about 15 years, Sherry Harris has been coming to the grand celebration with her children and now also grandchildren. She said it’s nice to have the whole town come together and to have it so conveniently close to home.

Taras Natyshak also made a grand appearance at the celebration’s opening ceremonies.

“It’s a part of our community and if there’s any place in the community that understands the significance of the birth of a country it is right here in Amherstburg,” said Natyshak. “We defended our borders, the War of 1812, our country was literally born here in Amherstburg and of course other parts of the province, but we know it’s a significant area for us and one that I think brings a lot of people together when it comes time to celebrating our country.”

The celebration closes later tonight at dusk with a fireworks presentation.

A canon was ceremoniously set off at the beginning of the celebration to kick-off the day.

A cupcake cake decorated with the Canadian flag was served to attendees.

Attendees were able the take tours of the Fort Malden barracks during their visit.

Fort Malden employees dressed in period clothing and performed tasks such as blacksmithing.

The Mike Ure Band performed an hour long set at the Canada day festival.

Kerri Brown opens performances by Kerri Brown Vocal Studio and The Catz Meow Dance Studio singing a cover of Roar by Katy Perry.
