Windsor Wins One-Sided Game 6-0

The tanks are full, and the Spitfires are flying again. For the third straight time (three of the last four, in fact), the Windsor Spitfires beat the Owen Sound Attack. Dalen Kuchmey shutout the Attack, while Windsor’s power line, consisting of Kerby Rychel, Remy Giftopoulos and Josh Ho-Sang dominated the offense. Windsor was victorious against Owen Sound 6-0 inside a raucous WFCU Centre Saturday night. The Spits have now won five straight games.

The Spitfires didn’t waste any time getting things going. They scored early in the period to take the lead first. A shot from Giftopoulos was tipped past the goaltender Brandon Hope by Rychel. Ten minutes later, Brady Vail won a faceoff back to Nick Ebert, and he fired a slap-shot straight to the back of the net. With solid goals, the Spitfires were up by a pair after the opening period.

Like the first, the Spitfires were all over the Attack in the second period. They continued to beat the visitors to pucks, to outmuscle them, to control the game. Their hard work was surely rewarded. The puck was sent behind the net. Due to Windsor’s pressure, the goalie misplayed it. Nikita Yazkov picked it up and sent it toward the net to Steven Janes. He tipped it in for the easy goal.

Following the little blunder, Owen Sound switched its goalies. Jack Flinn was heading in to replace Brandon Hope.

The task would prove to be too much as Windsor kept up its onslaught of offense. Once more, they earned a goal for their hard play. Cristiano DiGiacinto rounded the net and passed to Ryan Verbeek. He lifted the puck into the top of the net for his first goal of the season. The Spits took a four-goal lead into the second intermission as time ran out in the period.

In the third, Windsor continued its high-energy pace, capitalizing on its opportunities and taking Owen Sound to the limit. Their efforts paid off once again. Rychel scored his second of the game nearly six minutes in. Giftopoulos fought off an Attack player and managed to keep the puck in. He sent a soft pass to Josh Ho-Sang. In return, he fired it quickly to the captain beside the net. Rychel put the puck behind Finn to go up 5-0. Three and a half minutes later, the same line struck for the final time in the game. After dodging the defenders, Ho-Sang skated around the net before finding Giftopoulos out front. Without a problem, he scored with a little one-timer to extend the lead to 6-0.

Once the Spitfires finished off their scoring, the gloves dropped. It was a fight-filled final frame as the two teams had brawl after brawl. Ty Bilcke, Eric Diodati and even Nikita Yazkov had some bouts, including fighting twice in the period.

Windsor handed Owen Sound yet another loss, this one a 6-0 loss.

The Spitfires reduced the Attack’s total shots to only 16 for the entire game.

Windsor’s next game is Thursday, November 7^th when they face the Plymouth Whalers.
