A Windsor man and woman were arrested and are currently facing charges under the Excise Act 2001 after the Windsor RCMP concluded an investigation into the sale and distribution of contraband tobacco products in the Windsor area at the end of June.

During the course of the investigation, officers executed a search warrant at a convenience store located on Westcott Street in Windsor. Seized were 220 cartons of illegal cigarettes, a vehicle and approximately $6,000 in cash.

Charged are 41-year-old Diana Hanzel and 42-year-old Ali Gias Hanzel. Both are scheduled to appear in Windsor Provincial court on August 5th.

“The trade in illicit tobacco is a burden on all Canadians. Contraband tobacco presents a serious threat to public safety in Canada by contributing to the growth of organized crime”, stated Inspector Serge Cote, Officer in Charge of Windsor Detachment. “The RCMP is committed to targeting this type of crime to ensure communities remain safe.
