Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure, issued the following statement on the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway:

“I have become aware of an issue regarding some of the girders on the Rt. Hon Herb Gray Parkway.

This is of great concern to me.

Further installation of the girders in question has ceased. Other work on the project continues.

I will be asking independent experts to look into the situation and advise the government within 30 days on the safety and durability of these girders, and to make recommendations.

The girders in question will be removed unless the safety and durability can be assured and any compliance concerns are addressed.

Moving forward, I am working with the Ministries of Infrastructure and Transportation and Infrastructure Ontario management teams to review the administration of this contract and ensure the project company will fully comply with the contract and with the safety codes and standards.

I will also work with officials in reviewing how this contract was administered and to ensure we have a better process in place in the future.

The safety of Ontario’s infrastructure is our top priority and we will ensure that the safety of the parkway is not compromised.

Windsor, and the whole Ontario economy, needs this project, which is creating jobs and will move goods and people quickly across the border.”

Officials with the Windsor Essex Mobility Group released this statement:

The Windsor Essex Mobility Group (WEMG) today reaffirmed its commitment to building a safe, high-quality and cost-effective new parkway for Ontario.

The new Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway, connecting a vital trade corridor and revitalizing the communities that surround Windsor, is being built to the highest standards. Safety is our number-one priority, and we stand 100 percent behind our work.

The manufacturing process of the girders used on the Parkway has been certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the standard in compliance, safety and durability. Every girder installed in the Parkway bears the CSA mark.

Moreover, we have been working collaboratively with our partners in the provincial government to help improve the contract administration procedures on this project, which is the first transportation publicprivate partnership in Ontario. We are committed, as is the Minister, to ensuring improvements in the contract administration as this important project continues
