Windsor’s first and only non-profit science education centre, Canada South Science City (CSSC), is very confident on moving forward to a better future. As of 2012, CSSC is working within itself and the surrounding community to become a better asset for Windsor citizens.

With two upcoming programs for 2012, increased public awareness and activity, the possibility for new volunteers specializing in various fields of science, increased fundraising, and the motivation to better itself, CSSC is on a terrific path for the future. There is no doubt that in past months, CSSC has already became better appreciated and well known for its prestigious programs and exhibits. It has been 8 years since the science centre first opened its doors at 930 Marion Ave. to the public, and the time to step onto the road for a bigger and brighter future has arrived at CSSC.

Programs designed to raise awareness of environmental issues around Windsor are beginning this year, along with an interactive program designed by St.Clair College explaining the environmental precautions that are being taken around building the Ambassador Bridge extension, such as preserving wildlife and ecology in and around the construction area. Also, CSSC will see new additions to its already existing solar exhibits.

“We are hoping for more fundraising events this year, so that we can actually hire paid employees”, says Dr. Bill Baylis, a current volunteer at CSSC. With more fundraising comes an increase in jobs for Windsor, something that everyone wants. Also, CSSC is always on the lookout for new volunteers, who may have a special skill or extended knowledge into some of the things offered in the facility. “We are looking to extend into advertising and we are always hoping on people to spread the word of mouth to make Science City known around Windsor”, says Dr. Baylis.

There is no doubt that CSSC is a very positive thing for Windsor, and is going in the right place, but there is still a lack of funding to really push it forward. CSSC says they are “always trying for funding and grants, but it is difficult to receive them, and only 1 in 4 of those who apply get them”. Though CSSC is uncertain about future funding, it does not take away from the experience one can gain from simply spending an afternoon at the facility. All ages are always welcome, and there is something for everybody.

The future is bright, and opportunities for not only better business, but also for a better experience for the public, are here. The next couple of years will put Science City in a exceptional place in the eyes of the community, and push the facility forward into what CSSC hopes to be more volunteers, paid employees, specialized exhibit workers and a great place to be for the whole family.
