The Run for the Cure campaign which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research was host to almost 3 000 participants this morning at the Riverfront Plaza downtown.  Participants braved the cold to run or walk 1 or 5km and were cheered on by volunteers and passers-by.  In support of breast cancer awareness the Renaissance Center was lit in pink and displayed a pink ribbon.

Last year more than 60 communities participated in the yearly event raising nearly $33 million dollars for breast cancer research, and 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the run.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, “Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). In 2011:  an estimated 23,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,100 will die of it, an estimated 190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 55 will die of it, on average, 64 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day, and on average, 14 Canadian women will die of breast cancer every day.”
