Don’t be alarmed if you noticed a lot of cameras in use downtown Saturday – again this year, Windsor played host as a  “Worldwide Photo Walk” location.  This weekend is the 4th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk with 1117 sites around the globe hosting 28,191 photographers. Around thirty photographers from across the southwest Ontario region participated in the local walk.

Mother Nature could have been a bit kinder – the walk started with drizzle, brisk winds and a temperature which struggled to reach double digits… 10˚C felt cold!  The Windsor walk  started at 9:00 AM sharp at the foot of Ouellette Avenue.

Open to photographers of any age and ability, the local gang ranged from kids to seniors and had gear ranging from simple point-and-shoots, to high-end L-series DSLR cameras and lenses.

Bob Gallagher, a local professional photographer, planned the route and led to group. He noted that “the idea of the walk is not to worry about equipment, but to enjoy each other’s company as we move along in downtown Windsor.  It’s not the equipment that creates the photograph, it’s the photographer.”

Warned to follow the laws of the land and the rules of the road, we managed to steer clear of any serious trouble – though the lineup of police cars outside the downtown HQ made for a tempting “photo-op”!

The serious “glass” came out as the weather brightened and pedestrians stopped frequently to observe and question the photog swam!

It was a chance to explore the downtown core on foot, with on-the-spot coaching and suggestions from fellow participants. The route was an easy two-hour meander –  from the foot of Ouellette in front of the Bistro at the River, east along the river, up to Goyeau Street and then to Charles Clarke Square, All Saints Church, City Hall Square, Park Street to Pellissier, to Chatham, Ferry, Pitt Streets to Ouellette Ave. and back to the Bistro.

Some of the group deviated off the scenic route and explored the graffiti and grittier urban environment of the back alleys.

Outside, looking in… this is one way to explore buildings that will never be a part of a “DoorsOpen Day”!  The decrepit Coach and Horses on Ferry Street was the venue here.

Even for those of us who play and shoot regularly in the downtown core, this walk was an opportunity to reflect on our city with different eyes and share some favourite haunts with visitors.

The photo walk wound up at noon with a debrief back at the Bistro. The hot coffee and conversations made for a great finish.
