A Windsor mother and her daughter are facing assault charges after a Windsor Police Officer was struck in the face with a liquor bottle in the downtown core last evening.  At 7:55 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011, uniformed WPS officers responded to the intersection of University Ave at Goyeau St. for a report of a fight between a cab driver and several other people.  The responding officers were advised by witnesses on scene that several people involved in the altercation had left and were walking westbound on University Ave. away from the area.  Two other officers arrived in the area and approached the group of three women and one man walking at University Ave. at Freedom Way.  Officers requested the group to stop in order to investigate the fight.  Three of the people stopped and one female uttered an expletive to the officers and kept walking.

One of the officers caught up to the female and inquired as to whether she was involved in the fight.  Upon hearing the officer, the female turned and punched the officer in the face.  The officer took the female to the ground and was in the process of handcuffing her when a second female – later identified as the first female’s mother- ran toward the officer and struck him in the face with a full bottle of liquor.  The officer then turned his attention to the mother and was able to subdue her and place her under arrest.  As the officer was dealing with the mother, the daughter got off the ground and ran westbound on University Ave toward Ouellette Ave.

Other officers responding to the scene located the daughter at the Bus terminal located at Chatham at Church Sts.  The daughter was carrying two backpacks.  Officers arrested the daughter and a subsequent search of the backpacks led to the discovery of six full bottles of red wine.  Further investigation revealed that the daughter is currently bound by a recognizance with a condition not to possess, purchase or consume alcohol.

The officer did not require medical treatment for his injuries.
