PHOTOS: Windsor’s Music Scene on a Friday Night

Hello time traveller!!
This article is 4581 days old.
The information listed below is likely outdated and has been preserved for archival purposes.

Almost every weekend you can head to downtown Windsor, hop between venues and find some pretty awesome music at all of them.  To help showcase this idea, I spent the night of Friday, September 9th in the same 300 square meters, and experienced some fantastic shows.

At Villains Beastro, on the corner of Pelisser and Chatham, Valerie Page and Repetitions hosted a show to raise money for an upcoming 7” split. Everything about that sentence is awesome. Two stellar punk bands at a fantastic venue, who plan to put out an album on vinyl.  I’m ridiculously excited to see this happen, and any fans of punk or vinyl should be as well.

This was also the first time I’ve seen Repetitions with their newest member, John Bellon, formerly of The Posers and Corprophemia. It was beautiful.

Just a short walk away, (thankfully – it was raining) at the corner of Ferry and Chatham sits The Loop Building, which houses The Coach and Horses, FM Lounge, Pogo’s, and The Loop. On This night I was focused on FM and The Coach, but the others are great places to visit also.

Upstairs at FM there was a birthday show for this guy.

He played with his post-grunge progressive group Awake to a Dream…

As well as “strong-rock” punk rockers EVL…

And even threw in a short set from pop-punk-esque (but not quite) No Clue.

Similar lineups, different sounds, and yes, the guy in the red,

Is the very same dude we saw at Villains drumming for Valerie Page just a short while before. Have I yet mentioned the incestuousness that is Windsor’s music scene? Go check out Phog Lounge to see what I mean.

Downstairs at The Coach and Horses everything was very metallic.

One of my favourite local groups, Goliath, rocked out their brand of the heavy stuff,

Along with Reasons Lost, another fantastically loud group,

And the only out-of-towners I saw the entire night, My Hollow.

This group is from Toronto, and did a wonderful job of melting my face right off. I had never heard of these guys before, did not have any expectations, and was completely floored by what I heard. Loud, fast, and thrashy, their music was as infectious as it was heavy, and the entire basement seemed to agree.

So that was Friday night  downtown, all within half a block. Imagine what you could find if you ventured further?! Yes, a lot of this music was on the heavier side, but that is far from all that this city has to offer. Watch out for a citywide review of the folk-rock and indie that can be found in Windsor’s core.
