The Detroit River Canadian Clean Up in coordination with Parks and Recreation Windsor is holding their annual Pêche Island Day on Saturday, September 10th. This free event is open to any and all visitors that want to explore the tranquility and beauty this river island has to offer.

Pêche Island was known to early French explorers as the Isle du large, either because of its placement in the river (“at a distance”) or because of the likelihood of shipwreck (“keep your distance”).

The French word for fishing was used to describe the island by the early French settlers and the aboriginals of the area, since the island was used as a fishing station. It’s also been the summer home location for the Hiram Walker family, a provincial park and the site of a couple of shipwrecks.

With a history as rich as the flora and fauna found on the island, this tour is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your local lore, as well as show support for the rehabilitation and conservation efforts of this naturalized park.

Boat passage to the island begins at 10:00 am, and the last trip from Lakeview Park Marina will leave the dock at 1:00 pm.

Organizers for Peche Island Day include Citizen Environment Alliance, BASF, the Province of Ontario, Windsor-Essex County Canoe Club, Essex County Field Naturalists’ Club, the City of Windsor, the Detroit River Canadian Clean Up, and the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research.
