Downtown Windsor was all rainbows Sunday as the annual pride parade came through.

At noon it marched it’s way down Ouellette from Elliott St. to the new Riverside Plaza as supporters looked on cheering. The entire procession lasted about forty five minutes.

Participants in the parade included bars, hair salons, and various community organizations, among others. Basically a moving party, floats were colourful and musical, with glitter,  ribbons, and beads dripping from everywhere and everyone as revelers danced their way down the street.

Crowds seemed rather sparse at first, but as the parade approached the river both sides of the street became packed with supporters, a number of whom were dressed up themselves, waving flags or banners.

After the parade everyone gathered at Festival Plaza where booths were set up to promote sexual health,  festival sponsors, gay rights organizations, and vendors. The mood here was the same as on the street during the parade; a party-like atmosphere with everyone celebrating who they are and their ability to be open about it.

Before the entertainment of the day got underway, the entire crowd was able to witness the marriage of a couple from Michigan who had come here where such unions are legal. A touching ceremony that was a great way to get things going, it got the whole place cheering.

The rest of the day’s entertainment was set to come from returning master of ceremonies Sabin, local cover band Big Wiggle, and Toronto rock group She King.

It was great to see all the community support out there today, and I was happy to have been a part of it.
