Door to Door Human Gore, Weapon of Choice, Odium & Goliath @ The Blind Dog

The Blind Dog on Ouellette Ave was host to The Metal’N’Ink Fest on Saturday August 13th, featuring artwork from numerous local tattoo artists, and music from metal bands both local and out-of-town.

Door to Door Human Gore from Brantford had just taken the stage when I arrived, and they were quite the act to walk in on.  The tone of the entire band was low, the pounding rhythms felt deep in the stomach. And this is all even without a bassist, as he was apparently at a wedding. The vocals were more of a hissing scream than a guttural growl, providing a nice contrast to the low tones of the rest of the band. The entire face-melting experience was fast and tight, with performers that were fun to watch, nonetheless.

Next up, Windsor’s Weapon of Choice. I’ve seen and written of these guys numerous times before, and, same as always,  were a great crowd-pleaser. Although it was a bit warm in the venue, the breeze created by the pulsing low-end drivers and head-banging audience members made a refreshing breeze. Playing a mix of songs old, new, and covers, the entire set was solid, with incomprehensible growls locking in perfectly with the instrumentals and guitars ranging from firing machine guns to fancy fretwork.

The band that I was most excited for, Odium, did not fail to deliver. Coming all the way from Walkterton, they gave their all while playing for us. They were even nice enough to debut a new song for us. It is set to be released on their upcoming album, which the band is currently busy recording. From the sound of that one track and what I was told by band members, it promises to be even better than their last release, “At The Bottom” put out in 2009. Odium is heavy and atmospheric, and for all those A Day To Remember fans who are in awe of Jeremy KcKinnon’s vocal stylings, check out Tom Emmans’ and hear some truly ridiculous range and variation.

Hometown boys Goliath closed out the night, keeping the bar just as high as it had been.  Entertaining stage presence mixed with some killer jams makes this band one that is always fun to see. They are still playing in support of their Funweiser EP, which came out earlier this year.  If you’ve yet to hear this album, stop messing around and go do it. This group is one of the vertebrae in Windsor’s thrash scene, and there’s a reason for that. Great musicians with some awesome song-writing skill, whether it’s a live performance or a recording, their tunes get the blood rushing.

There were other bands participating in last night’s fest, but I was unfortunately unable to make it for them. I’m sure it was great, though.
