Police Arrest and Charge a Male Suspect After a Downtown Assault

Windsor Police have 23-year-old Michael Ondrejicka-Delong  in custody facing a charge of aggravated assault after an 18-year-old LaSalle man was knocked unconscious early this morning in the downtown core.

At 3:00 a.m. this morning, Friday, July 8, 2011, police responded to the intersection of Goyeau Street at University Avenue for a report of a man down bleeding from the head.  When police arrived, the  victim unconscious and bleeding from a head injury.  The victim was transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police say that two groups of males were walking on University at Goyeau Streets when they became involved in a verbal altercation. At some point, the suspect broke free of his friends who were attempting to hold him back, and punched the victim causing him to fall to the cement sidewalk striking his head.  The suspect and his group of four friends then fled east on University from the scene.

An off duty police officer who had just finished his shift was in his personal vehicle stopped for the traffic light at the intersection of Goyeau Street at University Avenue.  The officer witnessed the altercation, and observed the suspect run from the scene.  The officer exited his vehicle and followed the suspects east on University Avenue then north through Charles Clarke Square. The officer lost sight of the group near the Casino.

Subsequent investigation led officers to a hotel room at Caesars Windsor where the suspect was identified and arrested without incident
