Windsor’s newest theatrical production company is making their debut performance this weekend with the premiere of a musical that touches on topics both sensitive and personal. Issues that most people will at some point in their lives have to deal with, and will likely have difficulty doing so. The Edge Productions has spent the last few months putting together their rendition of Bare: A Pop Opera to give audiences the chance to get inside the lives and minds of characters struggling to come to terms with and fit all aspects of themselves together.

Set at a Catholic boarding school, the story follows a group of students in their final year, focusing on two young men, Jason and Peter, as they battle against religion, family expectations, and the social life of teenagers to deal with their feelings for each other. When Ivy, one of the more popular girls in the school, begins to show her feelings for Jason the situation becomes even more complicated.

More than just homosexuality, this powerful piece gives an intimate look into the world of female self-confidence, teen pregnancy, religion and it’s role in a modern teenager’s life, drug use, and teen suicide. It also allows some perspective from Peter’s mother, as she attempts to come to terms with her son’s choice of life style.

A believable foray into the world of adolescence, if not for the fact that most of the dialogue is presented in song, the conversations held are ones that could very definitely be heard in any hallway between classes. The use of music does not turn the production into a campy made-for-TV musical, but rather allows the actors a different way to convey their emotions, and all do so very convincingly. Voice cracks, whether just well-timed or sincere, pull at heartstrings while strong and sustained notes pull you into the character’s plight and make you feel their pain.

With raves, dream sequences, and drug-induced hallucinations, the lighting, sets, and stage usage make for an extremely visually appealing show, all plot content aside. Add in the talent of the performers and the incredible messages the company is looking to get across, and you’ve got one fantastic presentation.

The official premiere of Bare: A Rock Opera takes place at The Mission Theatre, located at 664 Victoria Ave, on July 29th at 8 pm. Tickets are $25, or $20 for seniors and students, and they can be picked up from Pause Cafe, St. Louis Studios, Nancy John’s Gallery, Twisted Apron Restaurant, Armeland and Associates, by calling 519-995-6651, or purchase them at the door the night of the performance.

Additional Dates Are:

July 30th at 8pm

July 31st at 4 pm

August 5th and 6th at 8 pm

August 7th at 4 pm

A talented company putting on a stunning performance with a message that needs to be heard, Bare: A Pop Opera is more than worth your time to see.
