Crazy Treats & Funky Beats At Walkerville Candy Store

Although children had been chattering excitedly, they soon stopped in silent anticipation.

Following the stiff hit of a baseball bat, organized chaos erupted: After about a dozen before him, someone finally busted the piñata at Candy Orbit’s Block Party. Forming a mob behind the building, kids were more than ready for a sugar fix as sweets spilt to the ground.

Greeting people of all-ages, the popular candy store (1520 Wyandotte St. e) hosted activities from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. A DJ provided in-store music and kept people up-to-date on what was next at the busy event, which kicked off with author of Grasshoppers On My Shoulder, Natalie Montcalm’s meet-and-greet. Face painting was offered inside and the previously mentioned piñata met its demise at 1:30, As Stilt Guys hosted the proceedings.

In addition to pop rocks, pez, twizzler, biggest bubble, chubby bunny and candy toss competitions, many performances were also held. A magic show began at 2:00 and D.Rens, Smyth The Kid, Jay Braaks and Lil’ Funk kept attendees entertained throughout the day.

“The girls had a blast,” said Mary-Helen Clark-MacKinnon, attending the event with her daughters Sydney (9), Addison (4) and Hadley (1). “The activities were appropriate for any age group & the staff made it a fun day for everyone …because we live close by, we go in there alot & the staff knows each girl’s name & favorite treat. They make them feel welcome every visit.”

Showing off their new selection of ice cream, Candy Orbit’s business was booming during the Block Party. Customers filled the Walkerville store, browsing through a selection of Willy Wonka candies, chocolate bars, retro treats and a lip-puckering sour section. It was definitely an experience that can’t be offered anywhere else in the area.
