Today I stepped out for a few hours wondering if yesterday’s storms had left any damage in the Banwell neighborhood where I live. It turned out that a few broken tree branches were the worst of it.

I walked around further, to one dead-end street and another, to Blue Heron Lake and the small trail running through Lakeshore Woods Park. It is clear that the environment in the area is becoming suitable for the birds and other animals. I remember when they were few and far between. It looks like that is changing.

It is important to note that the heavy rainfall has raised the lake’s water levels and flooded the lower lying areas of the trail. The concrete path is clear so it is best to stay on it. This goes for open grassy areas, they may look solid, but they are heavily saturated with water making them an unstable muddy mess.
With all the standing water around it would be wise to buy a good insect repellent. There were a few bothersome ones around the water.
It is also a good idea to check your yard and around your home for any standing water. Constantly check for and empty it out so that insects such as mosquitoes do not breed.
