Common Ground Art Gallery held a reception for Mohamed Alhaboob’s Going the Distance.

The reception featured colorful mixed media, oil and acrylic  paintings as well as intricate black and white pen sketches. The paintings were executed between the late 1990s and the present day.

Alhaboob was born in Yemen, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Sana’a as well as an art’s diploma  after studying in Korea.  His first exhibition was in Jibla, Yemen in 1977.  It was followed by six more in 1978, 1983, 1990, 1991 and 1993. He has sold pieces internationally, receiving a gold medal at the 13th Youth Festival in Korea, and two certificates for his work.

Mohamed Alhaboob finds inspiration in his heritage. He uses familiar imagery in his work  to express meaning. His style is influenced by surrealism and the concept of serial art. Serial art is created using uniform shapes and lines in a strict manner so that they create a systematic and somewhat consistent result. The idea is to use the lines as the basis of the image. The result can often be a patterned image such as the sketches below.

The show runs from May 20 to June 1. The reception was held Friday at 7p.m.
