Hello time traveller!!

The stage of Windsor’s The Blind Dog (671 Ouellette Ave.) was privileged to hold a bit of metal history on Saturday, May 20th, when Canadian thrash pioneers Anvil made a visit.

Playing since the early 70’s and credited as an influence to such groups as Megadeth, Slayer, and Metallica, they were still relatively unknown until the release of the 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil. While still not being a household name, they have had spots opening for AC/DC and Saxon, have appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show, and even appeared in the recent film The Green Hornet as a band performing in a club.

The Blind Dog held a well-sized crowd for this show, everyone rocking out to the classic thrash. The band played classic songs like “Metal on Metal” and “Thumb Hang” as well as tracks from “Juggernaut of Justice” which was released a little over a week ago.

The highlight of the set probably came when a female audience member offered the vibrator she had brought along to Lips (lead vocals/guitar) with which to play his guitar. His response? “I don’t know where that thing’s been!” before whipping his own out of his back pocket. Seeing live, in person, right in front of you, a dude playing a guitar with a vibrator, is not a thing to be quickly forgotten.  Only in heavy metal.

Their set lasted nearly an hour and a half, and was a fantastic time the whole way through. The performance on the stage was great, and the reaction from the audience terrific. With thirty years having passed since their last show in Windsor, everyone was anxious to see Anvil again and made the most of the chance.

The show was opened  by three local acts, Betrayer, Final Stage, and Perpetuate.

Betrayer brought their usual hard-hitting classic-metal sound, debuting a new song off of their upcoming album, playing classic originals, and the bets in thrash-covers. With a great stage presence, playing abilities, and songs, these guys always go over well with crowds and always put on a show that’s not-to-be-missed.

Before them was Final Stage, playing their first show since last August. Of a similar style to Betrayer, these guys draw influence from various subcategories of the genre “Metal” and that is really evident in the songs.  They’re an unassuming  looking band, but once they start going, it’s evident that they hit hard, so appearances don’t really matter. Next chance you’ve got to see these guys, whenever that might be, I advise you do so.

The night was opened by Perpetuate, who have been doing very well in the local circuit and beyond with the self-titled release they put out last month. Intense prog-rock-metal with operatic vocals and some very excellent playing, these guys have been reviewed by us before and always receive praise.

A big thanks to Gene Schilling for providing the photos for today’s review. He’ll have the full gallery for the show up and running soon, so be sure to watch out for that.
