An excellent way to spend a weekday night, the evening of Wednesday, May 11th at Phog Lounge was quite the show.

An amazing opening act, Lucas Silveira of The Cliks from Toronto started things off on a high note. Just a guy with his guitar, belting out songs with soulful lyrics about love, heartache, and sex. My favourite had to be his version of Kanye’s ‘ Runaway’ where he gives “a toast to the douchebags, a toast to the ass****s, let’s have a toast for the scumbags, every one of them that I know,” all delivered in a velvety voice, with a grit underneath and a weight behind them that makes obvious the emotion Lucas feels in the music, even if it’s not a song he wrote. At the end of the show I picked up his new album ‘Mockingbird,’ and have had it on repeat ever since. I advise you to look into it.

All the way from Minnesota, up next was Sick of Sarah, an all girl punk 5 piece. Their music was like smoke that filled the room and enveloped the audience. Instruments blended into a miasmic medley accompanied by front woman Abisha Uhl’s moaning vocals. Pop-punkish and tight, their music inspired some of he audience members to dance, but even those who chose to just stand and watch were enthralled with what was coming from the stage.

After taking the stage at last year’s Pride Fest, Hunter Valentine returned to Windsor to play to a sizeable crowd at Phog. Where Sick of Sarah surrounds you like a favourite blanket, Hunter Valentine tackled you from behind into a pool. In your face rock that sucks you in, don’t look at them as a girl group playing good tunes, look at them as a band that plays some awesome music, because their stuff would be great coming from anyone.

The vocals range from yelling and screaming to some angry yelling punctuated by squeaks that might have been caused by someone pinching Kiyomi McCloskey. The interaction between band and audience was great, with a substantial amount of heckling and somehow convincing a girl in a dress to do a round-off in front of the stage, effectively mooning the entire audience. That went over rather well.

In it’s entirely, the show was a fantastic time, and I can’t think of a better way to have spent $5 and a Wednesday night.

Here are some more photos from the show.
