Proving she’s not a flash in the pan, one local photographer is continuing to unveil her talents.

Based out of her Comber home, 31-year-old Dana Marchand is no stranger to adapting. With a husband and two young children, keeping a steady job wasn’t exactly easy. Luckily, the camera she got after having her son in 2007 soon became a lifeline to something else entirely.

“I got a DSLR camera in 2007, shortly after my first son was born,” said Marchand. “I started taking a lot of pictures then but REALLY got into it in late 2008. My friends were having babies and I’d always loved the newborn pictures I’ve seen professionals do – I wanted to see if I had a knack for it.”

Having loved photography in high school, Marchand decided to take two courses offered at St. Clair College. In 2009 she completed them and began Dana Marchand Photography that summer. Although the circumstances weren’t ideal, the benefits were instant.

“In early 2009 I lost my job,” she said. “I was also pregnant, unable to find another job and decided to start charging for the photos I did for people. Word of mouth began and it snowballed.”

Continuing where she started in 2008, Marchand focused on child photography. Taking shots of newborns, families and young kids, she also tackled couples portraits and boudoir work. With grassroot marketing through a facebook page and word of mouth, Marchand’s business took off. She’s received most current clients from past ones, has about 20 repeat customers and watched several children grow up over the course of taking their photos.

To keep things flexible, Marchand’s studio is also set up at home. If a babysitter is unavailable, her two children stick around while she works. Although Marchand’s four-year-old stays out of the room, her 18-month-old son stays close and often gets great expressions from kids being photographed: One of many personal touches that makes Marchand’s services stick out.

Usually providing same-day pick-up and guaranteeing photos to be ready within five days, Marchand brings a unique attitude to picture-taking. She remains down to earth in her approach and admits, “I know what it’s like to wait for something and I’m just as excited as the families are to get them their pictures.” It’s still something she takes seriously as well.

“People say ‘you get what you pay for,’” said Marchand. “Normally that’s true but in my case however, I give incredibly beautiful high quality portraits at a price that most people can afford. I have seen other photographers pricing and don’t charge anywhere near that much… I don’t like the idea of being an elitist, which I think a lot of photographers are – high price doesn’t necessarily mean high quality.”

Having conquered child portraits, Marchand is branching out into weddings. Using her ability to think on her feet with kids, Marchand hopes to help people remember their special day. She also knows how important weddings are and that a photographers best work is required every time.

“I LOVE my wedding photos,” said Marchand. “They are one of my most treasured possessions. I normally don’t like pictures of myself but look great in my wedding photos. I want to be able to give that to someone else …I want to be able to contribute to that.”
