London natives Baptized in Blood are still playing in support of last year’s self-titled full-length, and are getting set to tour Europe this summer, followed by a slot on “Heavy T.O.” alongside acts such as Megadeth, Rob Zombie, and Opeth, but last night they graced Windsor with their presence at The Blind Dog. People were pushing, jumping, and thrashing around the floor as these boys blasted through track after track of fast and heavy metal. Vocalist Johl Fendley complained of having pneumonia, but taking that into account only made the performance all the more impressive. The playing was tight and everyone seemed excited to be on stage. The band went right with it whenever the stage was overrun by over-eager fans, and by the end of it, it seemed there was more audience on the stage than on the floor.

Celebrating the release of their first full-length last night was Windsor group Perpetuate. Due to another obligation, their lead singer needed a few extra minutes to arrive, and in the mean time a couple of green-headed and large-toothed beings held the stage.

Kim did soon arrive though, and took her place behind the mic and keyboards to perform Perpetuate’s signature epic-melodic-heavy-metal. The way they seamlessly weave classical influences with traditional metal and modern progressive creates a sound that entrances first-time listeners, forcing them to come back for more and increasing crowd size at every performance.

One of Windsor’s longest running acts, Betrayer helped to open the show, as only makes sense considering the group’s frontman Jeff Klingbeil has a spot of guest vocals on Perpetuate’s new CD, giving a hand in their cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”. Betrayer themselves played a set consisting of music from their forthcoming album, tracks that helped to solidify their popularity in the city’s music scene, and covers of classic tracks by Iron Maiden and Megadeth. The crowd was appreciative of their set, bursting into cheers and applause whenever the music let up enough to allow for it, and calling for more at the end.

Desertion, another local act, kicked off their comeback last night, displaying chugging and wailing guitars, and vocals that went from thick and full growling to rather sweetly singing. Even if that vocal styling isn’t your favourite, you must give credit to a guy who can switch from one to the other as well as Eric Bezaire can.
