The Mudpuppy Art Gallery, located at 264 Dalhousie Street in Amherstburg, is an artist-run gallery with an emphasis on local artists and a desire to enrich the cultural spirit in the small town.
A cozy space with an inviting atmosphere, The Mudpuppy offers it’s walls to artists of any genre, any background. Right now the large feature wall at the front of the gallery is hosting works by Austin Dillabough of Amherstburg. His Mental Medley is a collection of pieces varying in texture and depth. Austin describes his art as spontaneous and random, varying attempts to try to put different ideas onto canvas. Working mostly in acrylic, his subject matter varies from sci-fi to nature to completely abstract, and he frequently employs an assortment of interesting textures in all of his pieces. Austin’s art will be on display until the 27th of January.
The gallery is also currently hosting part of the What’s in The Box series by Stephen Gibb, and interesting collection of pieces revolving around distorted human features incorporated into various boxy shapes and situations.
Perusing the gallery viewers can find works ranging from surrealism, to photo-realism, to dogs painted on rocks. And all pieces displayed are for sale at a price determined by the artist.
As well as renting out walls to artists, The Mudpuppy Gallery frequently holds open submission shows, with varying topics and reasonable entry fees. Coming up from January 27th until February 13th is a photography show with open subject matter, submissions requiring only a frame and wire for hanging. Following that, a Square show, featuring 2 foot by 2 foot compositions will run from the 17th of February until the 6th of March. An open Mic night, being called Beat Night will also be held on February 12th, as the gallery shows it’s support for art in all forms.
So whether you’re an artist or a viewer, someone looking to appreciate or purchase, The Mudpuppy Gallery in Amherstburg is definitely worth a visit to see some of the most interesting pieces Windsor and Essex County has to offer.
