The Jam Space- Windsor's only full-service rehearsal space for musicians.

Are you in a band, and tired of rehearsing in a dingy, musty location that just isn’t properly suited for band rehearsal? The answer is here! Introducing the Jam Space– Windsor’s first ever full-service rehearsal space for musicians of all types.

Don’t let the name fool you- this is much more than your standard “jam space”. The jam spaces I’m used to consist of gray cinder block walls, stained carpets, minimal temperature control and barely functioning toilet facilities. I went to visit the new Jam Space last night, and was shocked by the amount of thought and energy the Westfalls (sisters Natalie and Julie), their counterparts (Jay Testawich and Jeff Bourque) and Richard Rodgers (resident jack-of-all-trades all the way from Vancouver Island) have put into their latest endeavor.

Upon entering the building, the first thing I noticed was the smell of fresh paint. Next, the sharp-looking tile lining the clean reception desk. And then the stack of cool, old speakers along one of the freshly painted walls. When I asked if they were there for aesthetic purposes, I was told yes, but they also all work. “Some of them are older than we are,” Richard said. “They’ve all been well-gigged.”

Cool to look at, and functional.

Indeed, it seems there is a stack of speakers around every corner in the new Jam Space. And there are lots of corners. Once I got past the reception area, I was surprised to see room after room tailored specifically to musician’s needs.

There’s the lesson room, complete with piano and t-shirt press (yes, they can make your band shirts there, too); the creative office space; the individually sponsored rehearsal rooms (one of them is the Rock Room, partially funded by 100.7 The Rock); the premium recording studio and control room.

One of three huge rehearsal rooms, this one sponsored by The Rock 100.7.

Last but not least is the break room, which boasts the wickedest (and biggest) retro lamp I’ve ever seen, leather couches, a kitchenette, huge LCD flat screen TV, another piano, and of course, the video game Rock Band with all the accessories. The break room is sponsored by Unwined, a local wine-making shop, and it’s the perfect place to relax between sets.

The break room, with the wicked retro lamp.

Besides offering rehearsal space and a recording studio, the Jam Space also hosts open jam nights and drum circles, and they offer poster and CD cover design services. They’ve got a special Family Christmas CD Recording package available, that includes five hours of recording time, 10 custom printed CDs, and a family photo shoot. An ingenious gift idea for a musical family!

The Jam Space has been open for a few days already, but their official opening party happens tonight, from 7pm to 12am. It’s an open house jam, so be sure bring your favourite instrument and join in the melody-making. The Jam Space is located at 2680 Ouellette Avenue, across the street from Tepperman’s and beside the Stiemar Bakery. Close enough to downtown, but isolated enough that noise complaints won’t be a problem!
